My sister and her husband recently purchased a home in Denver and asked for my advice on refinishing the basement. With all the considerations, the biggest debate came down to whether they wanted carpet or tile flooring.

After much debate, they went with carpet. To help others out there, I wanted to write up the pros and cons we considered to help you decide between carpet and tile.

Wholesale Carpet Denver:

You don't have to be a contractor to get wholesale pricing on carpet in Denver.

Carpet is durable, and comfortable.

Carpet looks good and lasts a long time.

Wholesale Tile Denver:

Care and maintenance for tile is rather easy.

Tile is very durable and can stand up to kids, mud, and spills.

Tile is easy to install. Just cut it into place.

The decision for you really has to come down to the use and activity level of your finished basement.

If you have kids and the basement is going to be used as a game room, you might prefer the durability of tile to the comfort of carpet. If you'll have a pool table and a bar and will be hosting adults, you should likely opt for the comfort and good looks of carpet.

My sister has two children that love to run around and play. Their plan for the basement was to have it serve mostly as a game room for the kids. Since it will be getting a lot of use, they decided to go with a durable carpet.

They also had to take into consideration that the basement is used as an entryway and can track a lot of dirt, grit, and grime. So for the main entry space, they went with tile. That way they can come home from a day of hiking and drop all their dirty equipment there without damaging the carpet. The tile is an easy clean-up, and looks good next to the back door. The main basement area, however, is all carpeted, allowing a soft, yet good-looking, floor for the kids to play in.

Regardless, you don't want to spend more than you have to. Luckily, you can find wholesale flooring in Denver at professional flooring places such as ProSource Denver.

Embellishing your fireplace mantel is a great thing to do because it adds a special quality to the room. There are a variety of easy and creative themes that you can use to decorate your fireplace mantel. The best time to decorate your fireplace mantel is during the Christmas holidays. Christmas is the time when many of us like to decorate as much as we can. When planning your Christmas mantel decorations, there are few things you have to consider.

Here Are Few Ways You Shouldn't Decorate a Fireplace Mantel:

1. Fireplace Interior Painting
- Don't paint the fireplace interior with bright colors; instead paint the interior with black fireplace paint. This can cover any ugly stains and make the opening look like new. The color you choose could conceivably clash with your holiday decorations, even if the paint goes with your room during the rest of the year.

2. Mantel Painting
- Don't paint the mantel with bright holiday colors. If you do want to paint, check to see if the color competes with the general look of your fireplace and also the room.

3. Displaying Decoration Pieces
- The fireplace is the focus of a room and attracts a lot of attention. You may want to decorate the fireplace mantel with many of your favorite holiday decoration pieces, the whole place can look quite overdone and eventually neglected. Instead of cluttering your fireplace, you can go for a combination of selective pieces that go with the room décor, and you can always rotate pieces through your display regularly.

4. Choosing the Decoration Pieces -
While choosing the decoration pieces, make sure that they are sized appropriately, neither too big nor too small for the mantel. Match them to the room décor and the color scheme of the room so that they don't look out of place. Also, make sure that these items need to be nonflammable, if your fireplace is functional. Avoid books, kerosene oil lamps, wooden décor, etc. Instead you can display a centerpiece on the mantel such as piece of holiday art, a flower vase with a few sprigs of fresh holly, or a festive mirror.

5. Decoration Arrangement
- Don't arrange your decorations all in a single row, instead go for the three dimensional look. This can be done by placing the centerpiece toward the front and other items toward the end of the mantel. Or arrange them in groups of threes in the form of a triangle. You can dress up your mantel with a mantel runner and decorate it with lights and glittery baubles during the Christmas holidays.

6. Think Twice Before Drilling Holes
- Don't hammer nails into your hardwood or brick mantel, instead attach your stockings with hangars. These fireplace brick clips are a useful way to hang stockings from the fireplace without causing any damage.

7. Don't Decorate with Same Display Pieces You Use Throughout the Year
- Many people use their mantelpiece as a display area throughout the year whether it's a carriage clock, family photograph, or any other treasured ornament. Christmas is an opportunity to make changes in your usual decor. So, why not shuffle the display pieces for the Christmas holiday!

8. Decorations Should be Far Away From the Actual Firebox
- Be careful when you decorate with drapes, garland, silk floral sprays and wire ribbon around the fireplace mantel as they might catch fire.

Nowadays, it is possible to build almost any piece of furniture without being able to tell a dovetail from a bridle joint or ever touching a chisel. But if you want to work wood or if your interest is in repairing, restoring or reproducing traditional furniture, you will need to know the purposes of cut joints and the way to make them.

Cutting traditional joints is work for hand tools; the right ones, correctly used without rushing.
The tools you need

The tools required are few and mostly unsophisticated. Jigs, which can save time setting out when the same joint must be repeated several times, are available. But they are limited in the size of work-piece that can be accommodated and require much the same level of concentration in use as tools used freehand. You can also make your own jigs.

A basic setting and marking out kit consists of a try-square (for angles other than 90° use a sliding bevel), a pencil and a marking knife, a straight-edged rule (preferably stainless steel) and marking and mortise gauges.

The four basic tools for making joints are a saw, a chisel, a mallet and a plane. You do not need to use all four for every joint. For some joints you need only use a saw - usually a tenon saw, but fine cabinet work may call for a dovetail saw, which is similar but smaller. Even finer work - on small drawers and boxes or on models, say - may need a gents saw, which has a straight handle and very small teeth. A coping saw is useful for cutting out the waste between dovetails and pins.

Many joints require chisels - the most satisfactory type for general use is the bevel-edge chisel, in widths from 6.5mm upwards. A block or smoothing plane is needed to level the surfaces of the joint after it has been assembled. Rebate, moulding and plough planes could also be used to make the work easier. A router makes a better job of smoothing and levelling the bottom of housings than a chisel.

Joints
The naming of joints is not always consistent: some are called one thing by one craftsman and something else by another. Where alternative names are common, we have given both.

A joint is a fixed junction between two or more pieces of wood: it should not be flexible. The simplest is the butt joint, in which two surfaces are brought together in the same plane and joined with glue or mechanical devices, such as pins or screws, or a combination of both. A dowelled joint is basically a butt joint secured with glued-in wooden pins - dowels.

In a shop you could be faced with an enormous choice of adhesives: some designed for specific tasks, others for joining more than one material.

In general there are six main types of adhesive:

• contact adhesive, of which the most familiar are Evo-stik and Thixofix
• woodworking adhesives - Unibond, for example
• cyanoacrylale adhesives or 'super glues'
• two-part epoxy adhesives Araldite is the most well known
• two-part acrylics, similar in usage to acrylics
• 'universal' or general-purpose adhe¬sives, such as U H U or Durofix.

As well as these main types, there are several specialist repair adhesives - for joining glass, for mending PVC and for joining polystyrene as well as adhesives for jobs such as fixing wall tiles, putting up wallcoverings and hobby work with paper and card.
When choosing an adhesive for a par¬ticular job, there are several points you need to think about.

First, what materials are you joining together? Obviously, the adhesive has to be suitable for both materials if they are different, but the main problem here is with plastics and recognising the plastic is the first task.

Second, how important is strength? With wood glues, the bond can be as strong as the wood itself, while with metal and plastics it will usually be weaker. If strength is all-important, you might need to think about reinforcing the joint in some way.

Third, how big a gap is there to fill? Often, joining two materials will also involve a degree of gap-filling, and adhesives vary in their ability to cope with this. Contact adhesives, for example, need a slight gap in which to work, while eyanoacrylates won't work unless the gap is very small indeed. Epoxy glues, on the other hand, will work with cither small or large gaps.

Fourth, what kind of temperature is the adhesive going to be subjected to? Some adhesives (known as thermoplastic), such as contact adhesives and many of the 'universal' glues, will not withstand heal, while many others (known as thermo¬setting) will retain their strength up to moderately high temperatures. This could matter when you are repairing crockery.

Finally, how important is the appear¬ance? Most adhesives dry to a clear finish, but some end up a pale creamy yellow. Whether or not this will show obviously depends on the thickness of the glue line and, equally importantly, how well you clear away the excess; with many glues, it is difficult to avoid some glue remaining.

Contact adhesives
The main uses for contact adhesives are for sticking thin coverings, such as plastic laminate and veneer, to a surface, and for shoe repairs.

A contact adhesive is applied to both the surfaces to be glued and left until it is dry. The two surfaces are then pressed together and the glue allowed to set. With most contact adhesives, the bond is made instantly (which means careful position¬ing); some contacts allow a short time during which the two surfaces can be adjusted.

Many contact adhesives are solvent based, which means good ventilation is important and that naked flames and cigarettes should not be allowed in the gluing area. Acetone (nail varnish remover) or a special remover is needed for a solvent-based contact adhesive; water-based contact adhesives can be removed with a damp cloth.

Glues for wood
The most common type of glue for wood¬working is the PVA (polyvinyl acetate) adhesive. Several brands are available and the recommended solvent is usually warm water.

Where the joint might get hot or be subjected to moisture, you should use one of the special thermosetting types often sold for outdoor use.

You can still get the traditional animal and fish glues used for woodworking: the main use of these is in furniture restor¬ation where it may be necessary at some point in the future to take the piece of furniture apart.

Cyanoacrylate adhesives
These so-called 'super glues' set almost instantly, provided there is just a small amount of moisture present. The adhesive is applied to one component and the other held against it for a few seconds. The two components need to fit almost exactly together for the glue to take.

Cyanoacrylates need care in use because they can bond skin together - finger to finger, finger to eyelid or eyelid to eyelid. Most manufacturers now make a special-release agent to cope with this - make sure you buy one unless it is provided as part of the pack.

Two-part epoxy adhesives
Although expensive to use for large glu¬ing jobs, epoxics are probably the most useful general repair type of adhesive. They are suitable for wood, metal, plastic and ceramic materials.

To use the adhesive, you mix the two parts (glue and hardener) together and apply the result to both surfaces. Setting times depend on temperature, but range from about five minutes up to thirty minutes or more. The result is both heat-resistant and unaffected by water. Use white spirit to remove excess adhesive.

Two-part acrylics
These are similar in usage to epoxics, but the method of use is different the glue is applied to one component and the hardener to the other.

They generally make stronger joints than epoxics (particularly on metal and plastics), but are not so resistant to wash¬ing and will not fill gaps as well. Use acetone to remove unset adhesive; dry glue can be removed with a trimming knife.

'Universal' adhesives
The main advantage of this type of adhesives is its case of use you just simply squeeze the adhesive out of a tube, smear it on the surfaces and allow it to set. However, the resultant joint will not be very good and should be used only where strength is not important.

Adhesives are very important. You should know how to choose the right adhesives from a long adhesive product list. Just buying something won’t help until you don’t know how to use adhesives.

Before buying a rug, there is a little consideration and a little amount of thought that should be applied first. Things to consider include where it will be placed, both regards the room and where in the room.

The size of a rug is all important of course; too small, and it will not look right or fit the intended purpose. Too big, and you will have something overbearing and leave you having to pay for expensive adjustments.

Almost as important as the size is the shape. Rectangular rugs are of course more traditional, but excellent looks can be achieved with free form and circular shapes. These work particularly well in more modern spaces, but with a little attention details can work in alternatively fashioned spaces.

A rug will also need to last of course and, if in an area with a lot of footfall, (say a hallway or bedroom for example), it will need to be very durable. However, spend some time considering how often it will indeed be walked upon; if in a reception area or living area for example, you may be able to have a finer weave.

There are an awful lot of weaves available and, whilst most are produced with machines now, a better look, better feel and added durability will come from hand woven pieces. These will naturally be more expensive of course, which may drive your decision ultimately.

As much as the weave will affect the durability of a rug, so will the materials used. Again, there are host of materials to choose from. For many, nylon is good of course but whilst durable and hard wearing, they can be difficult to remove stains from. Cotton is very good, but will wear quickly, whilst wool proves too expensive for some.

Of course, the color of rugs is also key, with many wanting to match exactly the existing furnishings of their home. However, having a contrast works well again, this is very much true with more modern homes and apartments.

When selecting the color, be sure to also match these well with the weave and material. Colors tend to fade quickly, particularly in areas when exposed to high levels of sunlight. However, certain materials retain color far better than others. Cleaning too can strip colors, so be sure to be aware of this when maintaining your rug.

Patterns in a rug have not been favored as much as they used to be, but they are something that can work well to hide stains and help minimize the effects of color loss and wear and tear. Modern patterns are available of course, though many still prefer the evocative designs of the Orient. As a rule though, strong patterns are not advisable for small spaces.

Home and business proprietors are always seeking novel techniques to go green and set aside cash when it involves using power. There’s a large populace who are “going green” with a lucrative and sensible venture. Here are some benefits as to why solar panels have many pros for the home/business along with the environment:

In many regions, home and business owners can trade money for their extra power back into the grid.

Unlike traditional electricity creators, solar panels don’t use moving mechanisms and need very minor repairs or upkeep.

Panels make for a large savings on electricity bills and evade from the rising expenses and fees connected with using power from corporate utility vendors.

Many home and business owners love the fact that they improve their power sovereignty and can rely only on their power generating resources, apart from a corporate utility vendor.

Solar panel users can still have admission to power throughout electrical shortages.

Solar panel fittings are frequently authorized for tax credits and rebates for business and home owners, dependent on which state you reside in.

Solar power constructs clean power with no pollution or dangerous emissions, rather than conventional power sources. This can be especially valuable to businesses looking for commercial solar in San Diego.

Solar panels are almost always arranged on home rooftops, building tops, or stand-alone mechanisms, making sure that it takes advantage of the optimum sunlight accessible. Look for websites that study the location of the sun all year round to draw on the panel’s highest performance. Also, confirm that all impediments, such as branches and trees, are away so that the panels can get the optimum light.
Here is what the solar panel installation process requires:

Group together the necessary solar panel mounts to structurally hold the solar panels to the roof.

Arrange the mounts on top of the rafters and create a hole with a pilot bit to evade splitting the rafters. Maintain the mounts in a direct line using a laser light or chalk line.

Fasten the mounts with stainless steel lag bolts and put metal flashings over the mounts. Use metal rails to lock the posts down.

Sustain the panels and tie them into an alignment.

Finally, run the conduit to link the panels to the inverter.

Installing a magnetic door stop is a great idea for most homes because it can solve some very common problems with doors such as; lightweight doors that swing open and closed unexpectedly, heavy doors need additional assistance to remain open and poorly hung doors. Door stops are use primarily to hold a door open for a long period of time and they are available in a variety of materials. A magnetic door stop used a small magnet that is attached to the wall and the door to hold the door open and releases when it is pulled.

Door stops can range from heavy objects placed on the floor in front of the door to metal hook and eye systems. There are many difficulties with these types of door stops because not only can they be knocked out of place; they can also damage nearby walls and the door itself. A magnetic door is a permanent addition to the door that is easy to use and will not cause damage over time from frequent use. The solid brass construction ensures high quality and durability and is offered in a wide selection of finishes.

A magnetic door stop is a great addition to any home or commercial business and a practical solution. While it is useful to select a doorstop in a complementary finish to the existing door hardware in your home it should not stand out and become a focal point in your room. Door stops are helpful tools but should blend in with your design. Most magnetic door stops have simple and functional designs and traditionally are not ornate. Popular finishes include Polished Brass, Antique Brass, Polished Chrome, Brushed Nickel and Oil Rubbed Bronze.

Update the existing hardware in your home or business and create a unified look. Installing new doorknob sets and hinges is a simple way to update the look of any door. Kick plates are also a wonderful addition for high traffic doors that could be easily damage over time. Installing a kick plate to prevent scratches and gouges is a wonderful addition to installing a magnetic door stop so visitors will not damage the door and can enter easily.

LookintheAttic & Company offers a wonderful selection of door hardware, including a variety of magnetic door stops. Be sure to ask questions and search for solid brass construction. Door hardware, because of its frequent use and importance, should not be neglected or overlooked. It is important to install high quality knobs, hinges, kick plates and door stops so the doors in your home, office or other business will function correctly.

Chest freezers are a must for every restaurant, hotel, café and even for every home. Homeowners are being practical today and are constantly thinking of different ways in which they can decrease their costs. Chest freezers are just the right thing for a home since not only are they practical and convenient but they also help to save a lot of energy.

With most people working full time today, frozen food has become quite common. An ordinary freezer does not have enough space to store all frozen produce by today’s standards and this results in frequent shopping trips which is becomes quite frustrating.

Benefits

There are plenty of benefits of owning a chest freezer at home, some of which are listed below:

One of the biggest advantages of having a chest freezer at home is that it is a lot more energy efficient when compared to an upright freezer. Chest freezers are designed in such a way that they utilize less energy when they operate. Also, because of the technology on which they are based, they retain the temperature and keep the cold air trapped inside even if they are opened very frequently. This results in lower consumption of electricity and lower bills. Another way in which they help save electricity is that they have frost free or automatic defrost system. With the help of this, the frost is kept out of the freezer and energy is saved.

A chest freezer is also less expensive when compared to an upright freezer. Most types of chest freezers are sold today at a lower cost than an ordinary refrigerator. If all the benefits are considered, the cost of chest freezers is quite reasonable.

Another benefit with this type of refrigeration is that it can be placed almost anywhere. Those who do not have much space in the kitchen can place them in a garage or in any other room of the house and since they do not have to be opened as regularly as ordinary refrigerators, they can be placed almost anywhere.

They offer a lot of storage space. In an ordinary refrigerator, the freezer compartment is too small to store frozen food. With a chest freezer there is so much space that even large families will find the space enough for all their food items. There are different compartments inside them which makes organizing items systematically possible.

Chest freezers are equipped to store food items safely for a long period of time, even if there are frequent power cuts since they have been designed especially for frozen food items. The temperature within is maintained at the ideal level even during a power cut which does not allow the food to get spoiled.

They allow saving money because homeowners can purchase food items in bulk when they are in season and store them for using through the year. When bought in bulk, food can be quite inexpensive.

With so many benefits, it is not so surprising why so many homeowners today are investing in a chest freezer.

This heating season, you probably want to save money on your energy use. This is especially true during this winter’s cold snap that has affected much of the country as far south as Miami and Houston. But that might not be the only reason. You might find that your home’s HVAC system is always running hard but can’t adequately heat your home. Or some rooms in your house seem cooler or hotter than others. Maybe you noticed a mold or mildew problem in a room other than your bathroom. Perhaps your water heater can’t keep up with demand. You can fix these problems by starting with a home energy audit.

How does a home energy audit work?

An energy audit looks at several specific features of your home. First, it lists the characteristics of your home’s thermal envelope: walls, ceilings, floors, doors, windows, and skylights. Each of these features has a specific R-value, which is a measurement of the resistance to heat flow. The higher the resistance (or R-value), the better the insulative quality. Another factor is the leakage rate or how much outside air infiltrates into your home. Drafty doors and windows are the primary culprits here, however, other features of your home’s construction, age, orientation to the sun, and physical condition will have an effect. A third area to look at is your home’s mechanical system – the heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) as well as the heating water.

Energy Star provides a Home Energy Yardstick website so you can compare your household’s energy use to the rest of the country. The site is a good place to start and gives some basic recommendations about making home energy efficiency improvements.

Generally, performing your own energy audit will help you discover most of the major energy usage problems in your house. For example, locating and sealing air leaks will help you save money and make your home more comfortable. An easy way is to wet your hand and then feel for drafts around:

Electrical outlets

Switch plates

Window frames

Baseboards

Weather stripping around doors

Fireplace dampers

Attic hatches

Wall or window-mounted air conditioners.

Look and feel for gaps where pipes and wires enter a wall. Also check where your floor meets the foundation. And don’t forget mail slots. Check to see if caulking and weather stripping are applied properly and in good condition.

Every house and lifestyle, is different. It’s safe to say that climate and location are primary factors in how your home performs. The other major factor is how you use energy in your home. When combined with information about local weather, the home’s thermostat settings, as well as energy bills for a 12 month period (24 is more accurate), an energy audit can render a more accurate picture of how your home uses energy.

Unless you already have a few years experience of belly-crawling the dusty, cramped spaces of your home to weather-seal it, you should consider having a professional visit and perform an energy audit. Now you might think all an energy auditor does is seal a fan onto your front door and then prowl your house looking for drafts. Sure, they might perform this test, but not only do you get the benefit of their years of training and experience, you also gain from a fresh perspective.

Professionals can often see things you have overlooked that can help you save on your energy costs and be more energy efficient. For example, a slight discoloration along a corner of your living room wall might indicate an unsealed gap in your home’s framing that lets in cold air and moisture. This and other hidden heat loss can also be detected with heat-sensitive cameras, a tool most homeowners don’t own.

A qualified energy auditor can also give you an informed choice of options. Some fixes might just require a tube of $4.00 caulk to save you $100.00 in energy costs. Some fixes might be more expensive but can be done over time. An energy auditor can make recommendations for improvements and solutions based on what they learn about your living habits, needs, and budget. This can include efficient low-wattage lighting fixtures, getting the best insulation for your buck, as well was Energy Star rated appliances and upgrades so you can take advantage of both Federal and State rebate offers.

Remember, not only will an energy audit show you where to start saving money to heat your home this winter but it will identify cooling problems that cost you during the hot summer months. But whether or not you decide to do it yourself or consult a professional, you should do it as soon as possible so you can identify your home’s problems and develop a plan of action. After all, making your home energy efficient not only saves money, energy, and natural resources, it also makes your home more comfortable and enjoyable for you and your family.
